Saiva Saints Sambandar, Appar, Sundarar, and Manikkavacakar are specially remembered as the four teachers of the Saiva religion in South India. They revived and re-established the religious practices, especially the Temple worship, among the common mass and were influential leaders, at a time when Tamil Nadu came to be gripped under the influence of the ascetic missionaries of Jainism and Buddhism.
They reclaimed the people and brought them back to the Saiva fold. The duties of the all mutt heads to teach the people with religious practices according to Saiva or Vaishnava cult.
The pontiffs of 12 mutts in Tamil Nadu are so far doing their religious duties without any contradictions to Saiva sampradhayam except Madurai Aadheenam. . Any Aadheenam which are in contradiction to the time-honoured custom, convention and established practice of Saivites can be taken over by Government for question. Traditionally, the head of the Mutt, in the evening of his life, will appoint one of the many Thambirans (junior monks attached to the mutt) as his successor by giving him the title ‘Ilaya Sannidhanam’ or ‘Ilavarasu’.“But the Ilvarasu would not get the title as head of the Mutt, so long as the existing head is alive,” It was told by protesters,that this is not being followed in Madurai Aadheenam.
